Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Skin excess after pregnancies - together with umbilical deformities - or after weight loss are indications for this operation. Stretchmarks or real skin/fat "aprons" are signs that skin will not shrink back into shape but will have to be removed. After pregnancies one often has to repair the muscles underneath as well. In cases, where the belly button does not have to be moved, a simple lower skin excision - a Mini - Abdominoplasty - will suffice.

The Procedure

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia; local or regional anaesthesia and sedation are possible. Dr. Blaschke will try to use existing scars or at least the area underneath your preferred underwear for he incision. A short scar is the aim and a youthfully small belly button. Once excess skin and fat are removed and the upper flap is mobilised the new position is secured with deep sutures. There will be no undue tension on skin to avoid broad scarring. A drain is inserted to remove any wound fluid. Dressings and if necessary compression garments are applied. You should expect to stay under our care in the hospital for 2 nights. The drain is normally removed at the end of your hospital stay, and you will be seen by Dr. Blaschke and his team for regular checks. Stitch removal and return to normal activities should be within 2 weeks.

Surgeon's Remarks

The restitution of a youthful belly button is the sign of a successful tummy tuck, and a short scar is easier to hide. In some cases tissue removal in the lower abdomen will suffice, which carries a far shorter recovery time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Tummy Tuck leaves a scar. Can I still wear a bathing suit ?

We will ask you to show us your preferred under-  and swim wear to discuss the position of the scar.

Can I have another child after the operation ?

Yes, absolutely ! But you might find that your belly will distend again as before.

As it is a relatively long incision in the lower belly, does it hurt ?

It is of course uncomfortable for a while, but the belly feels rather numb than painful.
