Ear Correction

Ear corrections are amongst the most frequent plastic operations. Congenital malformations, injuries or tumours are indications. The operations are equally varied.

The Procedure

Otoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia in children and under local anaesthesia in adults. Local anaesthetic is being instilled to prevent discomfort and for gentle tissue dissection. Incisions are on the back of the ear avoiding visible scars. A shaping dressing is applied, which is kept in place for several days. An overnight stay is normally not necessary.

You will be seen by Dr.Blaschke and his team for regular checks. After otoplasties an elastic head band must be worn day and night for 3 weeks. Overall the postoperative limitations are rather small.

Surgeon's Remarks

The ears are more important for the body image than is commonly assumed. School children are particularly sensitive to taunts. However ear deformities are equally disturbing to adults, be it through injuries or tumours, and the remedy is a relatively small procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the scars show ?

No, the incision is behind the ear, and the reshaping is done under the skin.

Does it hurt ?

The first day or two after the operation you will need a bit of relief. After that it will be more itchy than painful.

Can it return to its old shape ?

In some cases it does, as the cartilage of the ear is very elastic, and the surgeon does not want to cause any damage.
